Turf under a play set

The federal Public Playground Safety Handbook says a playground should never be installed without protective surfacing, and that grass, dirt, concrete and asphalt do not count. It also says carpet and mats are not appropriate unless they are tested to ASTM F1292, the standard for impact absorption.

The handbook is written for public playgrounds, but its test is a useful one for a home play set: ask for ASTM F1292 test data for the exact turf and base system, with a critical height at least as tall as the highest part of the equipment a child can fall from.

Plain turf over a hard base is not cushion. Ask the installer what absorbs the impact, and how deep it is.

Rubber infill is a special case

Florida's state standard for turf on single-family lots bars rubber and other synthetic infill, except within the footprint of playground equipment. That infill still has to be free of heavy metals and intentionally added PFAS, and it has to be designed so it does not wash off your lot.

Room around the equipment

The handbook calls for a use zone that extends at least 6 feet in all directions around most play equipment. Plan the turf area to cover the use zone, not only the footprint.

Turf beside a pool

Turf around a pool deck has to drain well, since pool splash and rain both land on it, and the state standard bars pooling and runoff onto neighbors. The standard also says the installation must be designed so infill does not wash off the property, so ask how the edges are held.

Heat matters here, too. California measurements cited by a University of Florida turf scientist put artificial turf near 174°F in summer sun, and wet feet and bare skin are the contact points. Ask about lighter colors, shade and cooling infill, and test the surface by hand in afternoon sun.

Questions to ask

  • What is the fall height of my play set, and what critical height does this system have?
  • Where is the ASTM F1292 test data, and is it for this exact build?
  • Is rubber infill used, and only inside the play footprint?
  • How is the area around the pool drained?
  • How hot does this turf get in July, and what are my options to cool it?

Play and pool questions

Is turf safe under a swing set?

Only if the whole system is tested for the fall height. Turf alone is not a protective surface. Ask for the test data.

Can I put turf right up to the pool edge?

The installer can tell you what edges and drainage are needed at the coping. The state standard's drainage and anchoring requirements apply.
